Optimized grinding media TCO with Ecomax® Forged balls

A Gold miner in NAM was investigating avenues to reduce operating costs. They approached Magotteaux with hopes of reducing grinding media wear and explore the potential for High-Chrome alloys.

Reduce SAG grinding media costs and explore the effects of High-Chrome on the downstream process.




A study of the mill for impact conditions was completed to determine whether a “high-impact” forged grinding ball was required. A sample was collected for a High-Chrome downstream processing laboratory alloy scoping study to investigate the effects of High-Chrome alloys on downstream reagent usage.


The ideal Ecomax® Forged ball with the optimal hardness and composition for the application was defined.

Furthermore the potential for a High-Chrome conversion is under investigation.




The grinding media wear is uniform and optimal throughout the life of the balls. The customer is very satisfied with our product quality and its total cost of ownership.

The balls taken from the mill's discharge were worn down from 4'' and 3.5'' to less than 1'', without deformation and breakage.
